It started with a gilt and nowhere to put her.
In 1998 the Costons moved to Mullin, where Steven had taken the principal's job at the small school, and fed their pigs at the school ag farm. That year Adam had a Hampshire gilt he wanted to keep — but when the school year ended there was nowhere for her to go. Dale Porter talked to his father, Don, and the Porters offered her a place on their farm in Mullin.
Don already had four Duroc sows on the place. Those four became the foundation — the stock the kids' show pigs came out of, and the reason this is still a Duroc program almost thirty years on.
That gilt is where PCP began — Porter, Coston, Porter — and where a friendship began that has since become family. The R came later, and it came for a reason.
The Costons move to Mullin and feed their pigs at the school ag farm. Adam's Hampshire gilt needs somewhere to go, and Don and Dale Porter offer her a place on their farm. PCP — Porter, Coston, Porter.
Don's four Duroc sows, already on the place, become the foundation herd — the stock every one of the kids' show pigs comes out of.
Adam, Amber, Stephanie and Cody start showing PCP bred-and-raised pigs — the first of the family to carry the program into the ring.
Amber's daughter Kelby starts showing in Kindergarten, and the R is added for Rice, Amber's married name. PCP becomes PCPR — the name grows to make room for her.
Kelby enters her ninth year in the ring as a freshman, with Aaron, Raylee and Kelton showing alongside her — and River, Lakeleigh and Beckett already coming up behind them.
